New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using such drugs need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something flipping and you become ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
