Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
